The Recycled Bathroom

In the homes I have built for myself I have tried to use as much reused material as possible. In this bathroom for instance, the only thing new is the flooring. The 3’ wall wainscot were pieces of an exotic wood (“Kwilla” from New Guinea) that were cut offs that were too short for a soffit on a high end home I built in Keahou. The doors I bought from local cabinet supplier… they were goofs and were going to be thrown away. So I built a cabinet around them out of birch plywood that was used to package furniture. The granite tiles were material given to me by a friend that he found in his back yard and was slated for the dump. The trim around the door is cut off from an Ipe railing. Even the door was a demo door that I bought from HPM for $5.00. It has a different pattern on the one side than the other. The sink and toilet are from a remodel job.
